What to do… were to ask!

OK so my business is manufacturing. We employ 4 staff, plus my Mom and me. Not big by a long shot. But it is a high yield little production line, vital that everyone does there bit!
So here’s my annoyance; one of my staff members is constantly late! Not that she hasn’t got the most amazing excuses which can be quite entertaining. But that’s not really my gripe… we reopened Tuesday the 12th and surprise, surprise she didn’t pitch!!! At first I thought ah she’s just starting the year off late. I soon realised that couldn’t be the case so I called her. “Oh” she informed me, she is still up country her mom is sick (Ya!) but she is sure she will be back by next week!

Now I would personally like to tell her no to worry. Stay were you are have a fabulous time. In fact don’t bother coming back at all! But legally I don’t think I can do that, besides finding a replacement won’t be as easy as you might think. We work on a ‘work when there is work’ basis, this being the busy time for us means that’s every day. But there are times when there is only work 6 or 7 days in the month. Not everyone is open to working like that.

Being new to the world of running a business I don’t really know how to handle it.
I have searched the Labour department web site for advice even tried calling… Not really as helpful as I had hoped. The legal documents available are well, confusing!
They are structured for large companies with shop stewards and union leaders.

I don’t really expect a comment here…just letting of some steam

Hi

The problems you're experiencing are typical of the majority of small businesses. I co-owned a manufacturing business and had to laugh when I read your story as I've experienced exactly the same problems.

I'd like to give you some advice regarding the legal matters, but unfortunately my background is in management - I'm not too clued up on the legalities of your situation.

I will see if there is anybody else in our community that can help you out :)
