Two key aspects of all business success are strong financial management and marketing.

You cant have one without the other and the two are often at loggerheads.

I argued this significantly with my chartered accountant braniac on whether we should cost contain at year end or expand our marketing campaign before the end of the year.

What do you guys think is the best approach:evil:

Marketing should be an investment, and with proper information your accountant will be able to calculate the return on investment from each aspect of your marketing activity.

Calculate the following:
The lifetime value of a client
and
The cost of attracting and keeping a client for each lead generation channel

If you are going to cut back on marketing activity, then cut the activities that are the most expensive PER LEAD CONVERTED

If cash flow allows, then you can redirect these funds to more cost effective lead generation channels!

I am generally prone towards and aggresive approach and would go with exapding the marketing campaign before year end.

Then again it also depends on the nature of the business and industry - someone in retail would obviously benefit greatly from marketing now before christmas, while service orientated businesses may want to tone things done and try shift the demand to early January instead. Or rather - focus on long term, brand building marketing investments as opposed to those that yield short term results.

I don't think there can be better advice. :)

Comment on Dylan's answer - I'd go with "Or rather" Focus on long term, brand building marketing investments as opposed to those that yield short term results. But I work in Development, so that would be my only choice! Right?
