Homegrown South African Circus School 13 years 3 days ago #1007

What kind of things do you learn in school? Juggling flaming torches? Hanging in the air by your toes? Hopping down a flight of stairs on a uniclycle? Sounds pretty strange, right? Well, according to 100 youngsters, there’s nothing more exciting than doing just that at ZipZap in Cape Town, South Africa. We are a registered NGO, PBO, and social entrepeneur with a Level 1 BEE status.

These amazing young people from seven to twenty-three years old do it all: trapeze work, unicycle riding, balancing feats, dancing, juggling - the works! There are many circus schools around the world, but most are extremely difficult to get into. They’re expensive, and potential students have to pass many tests in order to be admitted to the schools.
That’s exactly what makes ZipZap unique - none of the students pay tuition and none of them have to have any special skills before they join the school. What these young people need to have are commitment, dedication and a strong sense of teamwork. In its multi-faceted contribution to the community, Zip Zap runs a variety of programmes, all free of charge for the youth.
