I am looking for sustainable ideas for bringing entrepreneur education and support to entry level entrepreneurs in marginalised areas. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. It would be great if we could get a small business 'think tank' going about how to effectively build enterprise development in South Africa. Government policies are not working and there is no cohesive private sector drive to achieve this. Lots of individual initiatives, yes, but that's not enough. I believe that as a business community, entrepreneurs should be able come up with a commercially viable solution to enterprise development on a mass scale. All thoughts are welcome.

Hi Colleen, I like your idea about think tank. I've been involved in entrepreneurship development with marginalised communities for many years and found ways that work (without micro finance) and happy to share them. Also helped people with disabilities get their own businesses going.

One of the biggest challenges I see in my work are the government promises of money (lending schemes) for small businesses which keep the emerging entrepreneur following that "money chicken" always expecting, instead of relying on him/herself and just doing it.

I developed a specialised training programme to help me work in communities with diverse education levels and background and happy to share that too.

Hello Bev
So great to find a kindred spirit across cyberspace.:)
Yes, the money chicken is indeed the biggest problem and we need to change that mindset if we are to grow entrepreneurship significantly. I would love to share ideas with you. I've just ordered your book, Entrepreneurship Made Easy, and will write a review of it for you. Then perhaps we could look at ways of putting some of your content into BizStart to get it out to entrepreneurs and give you more exposure. I'd also be keen on writing a case study on one or two of your projects - let's spread the news and inspire others to do the same! Please take a look at my website www.bizstartsa.co.za - not much on it yet, but it will give you an idea of what I would like to achieve. Then let's e-mail each other and get to work.
Kind regards
Colleen Lewis

Hi Colleen - thanks for your reply to mine. Please let me know when you ordered the book (assume on the bop website) just so we can keep tabs on that process. Thanks for the offer of a review on the book, which was written from the programme as many asked for something to take home with them for mum/dad/friend/family member. I like the concept of your biz and website - YGG (you go girl) as we say. Yes let's keep the connection process going and it would be great to share the entrepreneurial capacity building programmes with others (they was designed and packaged for outreach applications with facilitator's training programme, support materials and peer group network support programme (for after-care) but with lots of room to manouvre. The network was piloted with a local Municipality and proved incredibly successful in keeping the small businesses going (motivation) and brought mainstream business into the picture for business opportunities and .. and .. and. The bop masibambane newsletter in the press-room section on my website www.business-opportunity-books.co.za share the successes of this process. The entire programme was designed and packaged to provide business development practitioners with a good quality product that share the business philosophy (and not the development one) and for outreach application - it was even aligned to SAQA.. and that's another long story. Cheers for now

Tsk, tsk! Luckily I can't use my red pen on a computer screen :) I'll look at the Masibambane newsletter & check on my order. And will follow up with you via your e-mail address. Thanks for the YGG. Now that I am devoting my full-time attention to my venture, the potential for what could be done is growing in great leaps and bounds - it's quite hard to remain focused on the basics that have to be achieved first! And I'm finding amazing people all the time, like you. I look forward to our further association.

Thank you - and cool cucumber. Yup it is hard to focus on the basics, but they work, so hang in there. The entrepreneurial book you ordered will definitely help you also with the basics. Take care and as we say in our network - carry one, carrying on! YGG

Hi Colleen

The Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrpreneurial Development (RAA) has campuses in Cape Town and Soweto that offer a six month short course in entrepreneurship.

The programme was set up specifically for young people between the ages of 18 and 30 who would not normally be able to afford to study at a tertiary institution but who have a passion for or spark for entrepreneurship. There is a minimal fee but the course is largely subsidised.

You can read more at www.ackermanacademy.co.za

Please spread the word.

Kind regards

The RAA Team

Hi Colleen - hope you had a good Christmas break. Thought I'd share that I ran a 3 hour workshop with a nice group of young people wanting to start their own business, covering the basics steps of Where do I start, What can I do and How do I get started, taken from the Entrepreneurship made Easy book. They said it 'lit their candle' and made business tangible and possible and cleared the clutter. Perhaps you could give this one a try and see how it fits.

Here's to a great 2011:) Regards
