There was a topic regarding Ecomm software. The software is a minor issue. Further to this topic, I'm quite interested in the concept, especially drop-shipping. How does one find a directory or list of dropshipping suppliers and also, once decided on software, where do you host your shop? Do you set it up somewhere privately and run your own server or do you prefer an internet service provider to host it. From what I understand most of them kinda then limit you to the "shopfront"/ Shopcart software that they support or supply? Also, how big is the online shopping market in SA? Is it a viable business if you're taking on the likes of Bidorbuy or Digitalplanet etc? Do south africans actually buy online?

You can install any type of e-commerce "software" on your hosting server. Even if it doesnt have a c-panel. Which means you have a clean server and install what ever you want.

With some hosting servers you get a c-panel where you can select which software to install and are limited to only that software.

I'm not so familiar with e-commerce products, but it should be easy to setup.

Contact me if you need help with the setup and hosting options.

I've never heard of a server that limits you to what is available in the cpanel.

Cpanel usually has a 'quick install' system which allows you to install various open source platforms.

You can also easily upload the files, create a database and install yourself.

There are many software options available - really depends what you are trying to do.

You can buy a script for an auction type site, use Magento or similar for an Ecommerce site etc.

Searching online you will find many drop-shipping suppliers.

I do think that South Africans are open to buying online, probably not as much so yet as consumers in many foreign markets. Although I think the trends will be towards more online buying in SA.

Thanks, I was never really aware of what the c-panel is that they list as a feature on their hosting services. I thought it was the software itself.

Im sure there are many drop-shipping suppliers available abroad, but is that not a major risk when it comes to ordering, returns and general client service when shipping to South Africa. Or is there a sufficient amount of South African suppliers one can use profitably.

Am I looking at this with a too shuttered/limited view of how big this can be and about what resources are available to me?

It's a little difficult to advise further without knowing what you have in mind.

Trading online, you are not limited to any specific geographical area - so you would not necessarily need to target South Africa.

C-panel is the control panel from where you manage your email accounts, manage databases, php admin, quick install etc.

I'm not all that familiar with South African drop shippers, although I presume that they would focus on having a good online presence and should therefore be easy to find.

Dylan, I have actually come across hosting companies that doesnt allow installing of other software. I think its a way of making their money from the software companies they support.

But yeah building up a e-commerce site is easy. If you get in with the suppliers and even getting your foot in for the importing of products, you will make good money.

I know of someone that is importing fish hooks and fishing stuff and he is making tons of money from it just by selling it on his e-commerce site linked to his forums.
